Short answer
A local business becomes easier for AI search to understand when its public facts are consistent, its pages answer specific customer questions in crawlable text, its claims cite trustworthy sources, and its structured data accurately matches visible content. GEO does not replace SEO. Google says the same foundational search guidance applies to its AI search features, with no special AI file or schema required for eligibility.
1. Establish one clear business entity
Use a consistent name, website, contact information, service area, description, and official profiles. Connect the same entity across the website, business listings, reputable directories, partner references, and structured data. Do not publish conflicting versions merely to target different phrases.
2. Write extractable answers
Lead a question section with a direct answer that can stand on its own, then add process, limits, examples, and evidence. Clear headings, short answer passages, lists, and comparison tables make information easier for customers and systems to interpret.
3. Make important facts visible without scripts or gates
- Render service, location, policy, price when public, and contact information as crawlable page text
- Do not hide essential answers inside images, downloads, login walls, or form-only flows
- Give every important page a descriptive title, canonical URL, and internal links
- Include indexable pages in the XML sitemap and allow legitimate search crawlers in robots.txt
4. Use structured data as a description, not a claim generator
Organization, LocalBusiness, Service, Article, BreadcrumbList, and other schema types can clarify page meaning when they match visible content. Structured data should never introduce ratings, addresses, prices, authors, or services that the page does not actually show and support.
5. Build citation-worthy evidence
- 01
Cite primary sources
When explaining search, accessibility, privacy, safety, or regulation, link to the responsible organization or original documentation.
- 02
Publish first-party observations carefully
Explain the sample, method, date, and limits. Do not turn a project portfolio into unsupported market research.
- 03
Name the accountable publisher
Show who wrote or reviewed the content, when it was updated, and how the organization can be contacted.
- 04
Earn third-party references
Useful local coverage, partner pages, directories, associations, and genuine customer discussion help confirm that the entity exists beyond its own website.
6. Avoid the shortcuts that make content less trustworthy
Keyword stuffing, near-duplicate city pages, unsupported statistics, synthetic reviews, and mass-produced articles add words without adding evidence. Google lists keyword stuffing and doorway abuse among spam patterns. A smaller cluster of specific, maintained resources is a stronger foundation than hundreds of thin pages.
Frequently asked questions
Does a website need llms.txt to appear in AI search?
No. llms.txt is an emerging voluntary convention for summarizing a site's useful machine-readable resources. It is not a substitute for crawlable pages, robots.txt, sitemaps, structured data, or traditional indexing, and major search eligibility does not depend on it.
Is GEO different from SEO?
GEO emphasizes clear, extractable, citable information for generative systems. It still depends on technical SEO, useful content, entity consistency, authority, and crawlability. Treat it as an additional quality layer rather than a replacement.
Should a local business allow AI crawlers?
That is a business and content-licensing decision. Allowing a crawler may support discovery or citation, while blocking may limit some uses. Review each provider's crawler documentation and distinguish search or user-request crawlers from training-only collection before setting policy.
